Obituary

  1. 'Norma Louise Janes Soper

August 11, 1943 - March 20, 2020

It is with great love and sadness that we share news of the passing of Norma Louise Janes Soper, beloved resident of Hant's Harbour. Norma brought a kindness to every role she played, loving mother and grandmother; caring sister, niece, and aunt; businesswoman; and friend to all who visited her home. Norma had a generous heart, but sometimes the biggest hearts are the most fragile. Norma is now reunited with mother and father, Max and Irene Janes, her warrior grandson Kaiden Little, and brother-in law Sterling Bishop. She leaves behind beautiful memories with her daughters Tassie Matthews and Danielle (Michael) Little; grandchildren Leigha and Hannah Matthews and Alexander Little; sisters Judy (Roy) Pitcher, Marilyn (Gerald) Fleming, and Gail Bishop; brother Randy (Carol) Janes; Aunts Olive (Roy) Samson and Audrey Janes; and many dear nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends.

On Saturday, August 15, we will celebrate the life of Norma Louise Janes Soper in the garden of her treasured Hant'sHarbour home (149 Hant's Harbour Road).

Please drop by during one of two outdoor public visitations, from 10:00 - 11:30 am and 12:30 – 1:30 pm, to share your stories and memories of Norma with her family.

Due to restrictions imposed by COVID-19, we ask that you please wear a mask and respect the physical distancing measures that will be put in place (and please stay at home if you feel unwell). While we ask you to refrain from hugging or touching, rest assured that we will feel your love surrounding us.

A small private family service (by invitation only) will take place later in the afternoon, a cemetery service will be announced at a later time.

Norma brought a kindness to everything she did. She was a loving mother and grandmother; a caring sister, niece, and aunt; a strong businesswoman; and friend to all.

Please know that this is not the way we would choose to honour a woman that gave so much and was loved by so many, but in light of COVID-19 and out of an abundance of caution, this is what we need to do to ensure the safety of our family and the community.

If you are unable to attend the celebration of life in person, we encourage you to honour Norma in your own way by pickingsome flowers from your garden, pouring a cup of tea, and smiling at the memories of a beautiful friend.

Messages of condolences are appreciated and welcomed via a Facebook page that has been created in Norma's memory (https://www.facebook.com/groups/rememberingnorma/).

"The loss is immeasurable, but so is the love left behind…"

Norma was a proud champion of the community—a devoted member of the United Church Women (UCW), United Church Board of Session, Willow Tree Heritage Society, and many a Come Home Year committee. She valued service and the opportunity to connect with so many wonderful people she was honoured to call friends. Norma combined her outgoing nature with her business savvy, working in the Janes family business for four decades and for the past 10 years opening her home to many a traveler at the Point Bed and Breakfast.

She will be missed by all.

In lieu of flowers, the family would be honoured if friends and family would instead make a donation in Norma's memory to the Willow Tree Heritage Society of Hant's Harbour or the Islaview Foundation ( https://islaviewfoundation.ca ).

As you are aware, there are currently restrictions in place in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to protect families, friends, and communities. Visitation will be limited to immediate family.

Surround us with your love, but it's ok to refrain from hugging and touching. Please respect that many of our friends and families may be high-risk or immuno-compromised. If you are feeling unwell, please share in our grief from afar. We understand that it is important to grieve our loss together. We will create a Facebook group to share memories, stories, and photos of Norma with family and friends. At a later time, we will have a public visitation and celebration of Norma's life, and there will be lots of hugging—Norma loved a good hug.
