Obituary

Minnie Matthews of Heart's Content, passed away peacefully, after a brief illness, on April 15 2026, at Saint Luke's Homes, St. John's.

Pre-deceased by husband Ed, their eldest son Doug and her brother Dawson Pitcher.

Leaving to mourn daughter Donna, sons Brian and Ed (Susan), grandchildren Michael (Jessica), Leigha (Blake), Hannah and great-grandchildren Elsie and Jesse. Cousin and lifelong friend Betty Hawman and special niece Eleana. Lovingly remembered by her daughter in law, Tassie. Special family friend Theresa Brown and many other family and close friends.

Born in Burgoyne's Cove, Mom's first career as a teacher took her to McIvers, Hodges Cove and New Perlican. Family life took her to Labrador City, Sept-Îles, QC and Fort McMurray, AB before eventually settling in Heart's Content, gathering lifelong friends along the way.

During the next 50 years, she became a fixture in the community through her involvement as organist with St. Mary's Anglican Church, ACW, Girl Guides and many other volunteer activities. She won several championships as coxswain in many rowing races in local community celebrations.

The door to our home was always open, with a warm welcome to all. Mom and Dad spent many nights with friends enjoying a game of cards, usually poker with a mix of other games for a change of pace. Mom could often be found baking bread, cookies, pies, brownies, tea buns and a host of other foods to keep us all happy.

We know Mom is happy to be reunited with Dad, Doug, Uncle Dawson and her beloved cat Ricky.
All forever in our hearts.

We are grateful to the staff at Saint Luke's who provided comfort and care these past 3 months.

Visitation will take place at St. Mary's Anglican Church, Heart's Content, Thursday, June 11, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
