It is with broken hearts and profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Grace Coates, who passed away in Mississauga, Ontario, on Friday, May 8, 2026, at the age of 91.
Grace was the heart of our family. She was a loving and devoted mother to Norman (Donna), Roy (Jacqui), Beverly (Rick Preston), and Peggy Reid; brother Ivan Chislett, sister-in-law Lydia Coates; a cherished aunt to a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. She was an incredibly proud grandmother to Jennifer (Mark), Andrew (Erin), Mandi, Melissa (Dan), Abbey, Joshua (Danielle), and Jessica, and a cherished great-grandmother to Charlee, Ayce, Wyatt, Caroline, Harper, Olson, Willow, Avery, and Noah — all of whom brought immense joy and pride to her life.
Grace was predeceased by her loving husband, Charles Coates; her parents, Bloomfield and Jane Chislett; her parents-in-law, Norman and Elizabeth Coates; brothers: Willis (Gertrude), Frank (Margaret), and Lester; sisters: Mary and Hilda (Dieter) Nagel; sister-in-law, Vicky Chislett; brothers-in-law: Oliver Coates, Hayward (Evelyn) Coates, and Maxwell Coates; and son-in-law, Anthony (Tony) Reid.
Born in Islington, Newfoundland, Grace later moved to Winterton, where her teaching career brought her. It was there she met the love of her life, Charles Coates, and together they built a beautiful life and raised their family. After dedicating herself to raising her children, Grace began working at the Winterton Post Office, where she worked faithfully for more than 25 years. Through her work and everyday life, she became known to so many as a kind, caring, and familiar face within the community.
Anyone who knew Grace knew the kind of person she was. She had a warm heart, a gentle way about her, and a wonderful sense of humour that made people feel comfortable the moment they met her. She was someone people turned to for comfort, advice, and friendship. To her family, she was our foundation — always loving, always supportive, and always there when we needed her most.
Grace had a love for travel and spent much of her time visiting family in Ontario and Alberta. She went on many adventures and family vacations with her children and grandchildren, from cruises in the Caribbean to seeing Buckingham Palace in London, England.
The loss of Grace leaves a space in our hearts that can never truly be filled. Our family was extremely close, and her love was at the center of so many of our lives and memories. Whether it was family dinners, stories and card games shared around the table, phone calls, visits, or simply knowing she was there, she made all of our lives better in countless ways. The lessons she taught us about kindness, family, strength, and unconditional love will stay with us forever.
The family would like to sincerely thank everyone who has reached out with love, prayers, kind words, and support during this incredibly difficult time. Your compassion has meant so much to all of us.
We would also like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the incredible doctors, nurses, and staff at Credit Valley Hospital for the compassion, care, and kindness they showed Grace and our family during her final days. Your support, comfort, and dedication meant more to us than words can truly express, and we will always be deeply grateful.
Visitation will take place on Friday, August 7, 2026 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Green's Funeral Home, Main Highway, Winterton, Newfoundland.
A service celebrating Grace's life will be held on Saturday, August 8, at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Hall in Winterton, followed by a celebration of life at Trinity Hall with family and friends.
